Made in Japan – Furo-style Trivet (Gotoku) with “Worm-Eaten” Design, 7 Sun, Iron
Introducing a Japanese-made gotoku trivet for use with a furo (portable brazier used in tea ceremony).
The gotoku is a support stand used in the Japanese tea ceremony, placed under the kettle (kama). Three upright pillars rise from a circular base, each ending in an inward-curving claw that securely holds the kettle in place.
This particular gotoku has a diameter of 7 sun (approximately 21 cm), making it suitable for use with furo kettles, except for the kiriawase (cut-to-fit) style. As it is designed for use with a furo, a portion of the ring is cut away to allow for the placement of the front tile (maegawara).
It is said that the use of a gotoku in the furo began with either Jukō (Murata Jukō) or Jōō (Takeno Jōō); before that time, supports such as kiriawase or tōki were commonly used.
While the shape and thickness of the claws can vary depending on the piece, the claws on this gotoku are of a balanced, moderate thickness—neither too thick nor too thin—making it practical and easy to use.
The legs of the trivet feature a “mushikui” (worm-eaten) design, a decorative detail that gives the piece a refined, wabi (austere, rustic beauty) aesthetic, enhancing its traditional charm.
