Shoraku’s Kikikōro (Incense-Listening Burner) with Kōro Glaze
Introducing the Kikikōro (Incense-Listening Burner) by Shoraku.
A Kikikōro is not an incense burner for display or decoration, but rather a burner used in the incense ceremony or tea ceremony to “listen” to the fragrance of incense.
“Listening to the fragrance” means to distinguish and savor the aroma of the incense, and this practice developed into a refined art known as Kōdō, the Way of Incense.
The practice of listening to the incense is also part of the tea ceremony, and a Kikikōro is used in that context as well.
Kikikōro are made small and portable, as they are held in the hand to smell the incense. To facilitate this, they do not have a smoke return (a rim bent inward), and instead have a simple, single opening.
For ease of handling, the Kikikōro has a cylindrical shape with no lid and is supported by three legs.
This incense burner is glazed with kōro-yu, a glaze traditionally used for incense burners. The glaze, introduced by the second generation of the Raku family, Jōkei, is a white overglaze that develops black crackles, which is a distinctive feature.
Jōkei, who made numerous incense burners, passed down many famous incense burners, leading to this white glaze being called kōro-yu (incense burner glaze).
Although small and fitting comfortably in the hand, this incense burner holds much history within its form.
