Kiyomizu Ware – Nanban Mishima Mug Cup Pair (Red & Blue)
Introducing a pair of Nanban Mishima mug cups from Kiyomizu ware.
“Nanban” refers to unglazed, high-fired pottery that originated in the southern regions such as Southeast Asia. It typically has a coarse, rough texture and an earthy, rustic appearance.
Often characterized by a dark brownish-black color, pottery made in Japan that adopts this style is also referred to as “Nanban.”
The Mishima technique involves stamping flower-shaped patterns, known as inka, by hand one at a time onto the surface. Colored clay is then rubbed into the indented areas created by the stamps. This results in red and blue floral patterns subtly emerging from the dark surface.
The exterior of the mug is almost entirely covered with these stamped patterns, requiring a high level of skill and meticulous effort.
The body of the mug is wheel-thrown, making it surprisingly lightweight despite its robust appearance, giving it an elegant and refined feel.
The rim gently flares outward, providing a smooth and comfortable drinking experience.
This pair of mugs is a fine example of expert craftsmanship and traditional artistry.
