Hagi Ware Flat Matcha Bowl by Koyo Hayashi – “Kairagi” Biwa Glaze
Introducing a flat matcha bowl (hira chawan) made by Koyo Hayashi, from Hagi ware.
This type of tea bowl is often called a summer chawan or hira chawan, and is typically used during the warmer months.
Compared to standard matcha bowls, it has a lower height and a wider mouth, designed to allow the tea to cool more quickly and offer a refreshing tea experience even in hot weather.
The bowl is wheel-thrown and finished with a biwa-colored (loquat-hued) glaze, giving it a soft, warm, and deeply atmospheric appearance.
The body of the bowl shows distinct wheel marks, with countless fine crackles (crazing) and pinholes on the surface, giving it a rough and rustic character.
The most distinctive feature of this bowl is the “Kairagi” texture.
“Kairagi” refers to areas where the glaze has shrunk and cracked during firing, creating a unique textured pattern.
The term originally comes from the skin of a stingray, traditionally used to decorate the hilt of Japanese swords, as the rough, granular, and cracked glaze surface resembles stingray skin.
In the world of tea ceremony, this kairagi texture is especially prized for its visual beauty and unique surface “landscape.”
The bowl is carefully shaped on the potter’s wheel, with streaks of white glaze dripping down the body, leaving several areas where the underlying clay is exposed as the glaze naturally splits.
Crackles spread across the entire surface, giving the piece a bold and powerful impression.
Both the interior and exterior show wheel-thrown marks, and the rim flares slightly outward (hane-zorii shape), making it very comfortable to drink from.
As you use the bowl over time, tea stains will gradually seep into the crackles, creating subtle color changes—known as “Hagi no Shichihenge” (The Seven Transformations of Hagi)—which is another delightful feature of Hagi ware.

萩燒 林紅陽 作 鯉魚子釉 平茶碗 枇杷釉
這是一款來自萩燒,由林紅陽製作的平茶碗介紹。
此款抹茶碗,又被稱為夏茶碗或平茶碗,
是用於炎熱季節的抹茶碗。
與普通的抹茶碗相比,高度較低、口徑較大,
為了讓人在炎夏時能感覺涼爽,
特意做成口徑寬闊,使抹茶更容易冷卻。
以陶土手工拉坯成型後施釉燒製而成。
枇杷色的釉藥呈現出一種難以言喻的
柔和且富有情趣的風合。
碗身帶有明顯的拉坯痕跡,表面可見
無數的貫入紋和氣泡孔,展現出一種粗獷的質感。
這款抹茶碗的最大特點,當屬「鯉魚子釉」。
所謂「鯉魚子釉」,是指釉面因收縮而產生
龜裂狀紋理的部分。
「鯉魚子」原本指的是裝飾刀劍柄部的
鱘魚皮,因釉面收縮、呈現粗糙裂紋,
質感與鯊魚皮相似,因此得名。
這種「鯉魚子釉」在茶道中尤為受到喜愛,
被視為賞景的一部分。
以陶土拉坯製作,局部可見白釉自然流掛,
釉面開裂,底土隱約可見,
多處呈現龜裂紋,整體帶來強烈的視覺衝擊。
碗內外均可見拉坯紋,碗口為羽反形,
飲用時更加順口。
經長期使用後,因為有「萩之七變化」之說,
貫入紋中會逐漸滲入茶漬等,
色澤也會隨之變化,呈現出更深層次的風味,
讓人盡情享受其歲月變化之美。
