Introducing a tea box made of Echizen lacquer, with a lacquered finish in a dark brown color, and crafted from paulownia wood.
A tea box, known as “chabako,” is a portable container designed to hold all the necessary tools for the tea ceremony (box only). It is used to prepare and enjoy matcha tea while traveling or during outdoor tea gatherings.
The design and materials of tea boxes vary, but the original Rikyu-style was made from paulownia wood, while the later favorite of Sotan was the red lacquered version with a “ikkan-bari” finish.
This tea box features a simple, dark brown lacquered design. It has a lid with a hole for the tea whisk, known as a “kakeko” lid.
Traditionally, there were no specific rules for tea boxes, but under the Ura-Senke school, the method for using them was developed by the tea master Gen-Gen-sai.
The simplicity of the dark lacquered finish reveals the natural texture of the wood and ensures that the tea box remains appealing over time. The interior is finished in black, maintaining a simple design. The rich, dark brown color exudes a sense of luxury.
Being very lightweight, this tea box is easy to carry. Historical tea practitioners would bring such tea boxes with them while traveling, indicating that tea was always a close companion.
The quality of the box’s finish makes it suitable for use as a storage box as well.
