Echizen Lacquerware Medium Natsume (Matcha Container) – Negoro Technique, Wood, Urushi Coating
Introducing a wooden matcha container (thin tea container) used in the tea ceremony, crafted from Echizen lacquerware.
The container is carved from wood and finished with the Negoro lacquer technique, where urushi lacquer is applied.
Negoro lacquer refers to the technique and style of lacquerware originating from Negoro-ji Temple in Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture).
The tradition began in the first year of the Shōō era (1288), when monks from Mount Kōya moved to Negoro Village, established the temple, and began creating not only Buddhist altars and utensils but also ceremonial tableware, bowls, and other items for use by both monks and guests.
For temple use, a layer of red lacquer was applied over black lacquer, while for general use, black lacquer was left unadorned, resulting in the “black Negoro” style.
The red lacquer layer gradually wears away with use, revealing the black base beneath, and many items intentionally have parts of this black base exposed. This tea container also shows the underlying black.
The shape is known as natsume, named after the fruit of the jujube tree, as it resembles the shape of the fruit.
This is one of the most popular shapes for tea containers and is commonly seen in tea ceremonies.
The size is known as chū-natsume, which is the most commonly used size.
The design is simple and without seasonal motifs, making it suitable for use throughout the year.
