Bizen Pottery Handled Mini Flower Vase

Bizen ware is a type of pottery produced in the Bizen region, near Bizen City in Okayama Prefecture. It is created using an ancient firing method called “oxidation flame firing,” which involves firing the pottery without any glaze, allowing the natural characteristics of the clay to shine through.
Bizen ware is known for its unique qualities, such as its ability to help water in flower vases resist decay, which allows flowers to last longer. Similarly, tea bowls and teacups made from Bizen pottery are said to enhance the flavor of water and tea, giving them a smoother, mellower taste.
This particular flower vase is made using a technique called goma (sesame). Goma refers to the effect created during firing when the ash from pine wood fuel adheres to the surface of the pottery and melts, creating a speckled pattern that resembles sesame seeds.
The vase was formed on the potter’s wheel and then shaped by pressing the sides of the central part from both directions. The top was shaped by hand, resulting in a wide, irregular form that gives the vase a unique and distinctive appearance.
The vase is designed with a handle, making it easy to hang or place on a surface. It can be displayed either hanging from a hook or placed normally for use.
