Bizen Ware Square-Shaped Deformed Flower Vase
Introducing a uniquely shaped square flower vase from Bizen ware.
Bizen ware is a type of pottery produced in and around Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture. It is fired using an oxidation flame method (sōkaen yōsei) without any glaze, resulting in a dense, unglazed surface that highlights the natural texture of the clay.
Due to the unique properties of Bizen clay, Bizen ware is said to offer practical benefits. For example, flower vases made from Bizen ware help keep water from stagnating, allowing flowers to stay fresh longer. Similarly, tea cups made from Bizen clay are believed to enhance the smoothness of water or tea.
This vase features a firing effect known as goma (literally “sesame”), which occurs when ash from the pine wood fuel adheres to the pottery surface during firing. As the ash melts, it creates a natural speckled pattern resembling sprinkled sesame seeds.
The goma kiln effects appear in various areas of the vase, giving it a refined and rustic character.
The vase is crafted by subtly twisting a cylindrical square form, creating a dynamic, slightly deformed shape.
Although the twist is subtle, it gives the vase a sense of movement and vitality.
The opening is a small, perfectly square shape with an inner diameter of 3 cm, making it slightly larger than a traditional single-flower vase. It is ideal for arranging a few branches or stems.
The square rim also provides natural support for branches and stems at its corners, making it easier to arrange flowers with stability.
While Bizen ware is unglazed, this vase exhibits yōhen (kiln variations), visible from the mouth to the shoulder and down to the central body, enhancing its distinctive appearance.
This versatile piece can be used in various settings, from tea flowers displayed in a tokonoma alcove to floral arrangements placed at an entrance.
