Banko Ware, Zuiho Creation, Set of 10 Tea Bowls, Komagata Shape, Dutch Pattern
Introducing a set of 10 tea bowls in the Dutch style, created by Zuiho of Banko ware.
A “set of tea bowls” refers to a collection of the same type of matcha bowls, typically used at large gatherings such as tea ceremonies. When there are many guests being served matcha, it’s common to use bowls of the same design rather than individual ones for each serving.
These tea bowls generally share the same shape, with good stacking properties, making them easy to handle and manage.
The design is based on the Dutch pattern. The term “Dutch” refers to the ceramic ware that was brought to Japan by Dutch ships during the Edo period. In the context of tea ceremonies, the design featuring yellow and blue “tobacco leaves” is commonly referred to as “Dutch.”
The design typically includes blue and yellow tobacco leaves interspersed with arabesque patterns, with the brushwork being vivid and dynamic, a feature that has been highly respected among tea practitioners for centuries.
The cream-colored body of the bowls has fine crackling, giving it a bright and gentle texture. The pattern extends over the entire exterior, with rich and vibrant hues of blue and yellow dominating the design.
The shape mimics a “Komagata” style, with a comfortable grip at the base, making it easy to hold and handle.
