Shunkei Lacquered Wooden Gift Tray (Kimpu Tray) – Large, Lacquered
We would like to introduce the wooden gift tray (Kimpu tray) from Hida Shunkei lacquerware.
The material used is natural wood that is over 200 years old. The wood is first planed into a flat shape, then carefully dried for several years to prevent warping or distortion. Only after this drying process can the wood be used for crafting.
Regarding the lacquer coating, it is done with genuine urushi (Japanese lacquer). The unique luster and texture of the urushi lacquer are what make this piece a top-quality item, a result of skilled craftsmanship.
The lacquering process involves at least nine stages: sanding the wood, sealing, coloring, base coating, finishing sanding, applying ground lacquer, wrapping with black lacquer, further polishing with lacquer, top coating, and drying. During the drying process, extra care is taken to prevent dust and debris from adhering to the surface, and to avoid “lacquer runs,” the tray is rotated every few minutes while drying.
Genuine urushi lacquer retains its beautiful texture and durability over time, becoming even more exquisite with age.
A Kimpō Tray is used to present money for gifts or offerings, such as for thanks or congratulations. The money is placed in an envelope or a special ceremonial bag and presented on the tray. This type of tray is used for formal ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and other important occasions.
It is also known by other names such as “Shūgi-bon” (gift tray) or “Kitte-bon” (stamp tray), as it is used when offering donations to temples. Here, it is referred to as a “Kimpu Tray” because it is specifically used to present money offerings, especially when giving donations to temples. It is considered inappropriate to hand money directly to the temple, so the custom is to place it on a Kimpu Tray for presentation.
This Kimpu Tray is a high-quality lacquerware piece, made from wood and coated with urushi lacquer, and it caters to those seeking “genuine” items. Once purchased, it can be used for many years.
It is suitable for both celebratory events and Buddhist ceremonies. The tray feels light in hand and has a distinct luster and texture. If you are looking for something truly exceptional, we highly recommend considering this piece.
Please note that some products labeled as “Shunkei” may not be made of wood or lacquered with urushi. For peace of mind, we recommend purchasing from a reputable specialist store.
