Yamanaka Lacquerware – Wooden Kinin-dai (Stand for Nobles) – Zelkova Wood
We are pleased to introduce this wooden kinin-dai (stand for nobles) from Yamanaka lacquerware.
The kinin-dai refers to a type of tenmokudai (Tenmoku tea bowl stand) used specifically in the kinin-date (tea preparation for nobility) style of the Japanese tea ceremony.
A tenmokudai is a stand used to hold a tenmoku-chawan (Tenmoku-style tea bowl) during service. It is customary to use a new, unfinished wooden stand for this purpose.
Such wooden stands are also used for tea offerings made at Shinto altars.
The term kinin-date refers to the ceremonial procedures performed when serving tea to a person of noble or high rank—kinin meaning a person of elevated social or official status.
With utmost attention to cleanliness and purity, a new Tenmoku-style matcha bowl is placed on the kinin-dai during this form of tea preparation.
The confectionery dish used in this context is typically a tall pedestal tray (takatsuki) lined with neatly folded white paper.
In both thick tea (koicha) and thin tea (usucha) services for nobility, it is the rule that each guest is served with their own individual tea bowl.
This piece showcases the beautiful natural grain of keyaki (Japanese zelkova), allowing you to experience the warmth and organic charm of the wood. Its natural unfinished surface gives off a sense of cleanliness unique to plain wood.
It is also suitable for tea offerings to deities or ancestors.
