Akazu Ware – Oribe Flat Matcha Bowl by Tetsuzan Matsumoto
This is an Oribe-style matcha bowl crafted by Tetsuzan Matsumoto, a potter of Akazu ware.
Formed on the potter’s wheel using beige clay, it is finished with a traditional Oribe glaze.
The hira-chawan (flat tea bowl) is characterized by a wider mouth and lower profile compared to a standard matcha bowl.
This design allows the tea to cool more quickly, making it particularly well-suited for the warmer seasons. The wide opening is a thoughtful feature, embodying the host’s hospitality and sensitivity to seasonal comfort.
Although earthenware matcha bowls may appear heavy at first glance, this piece is surprisingly light due to the potter’s refined wheel-throwing technique, which results in a thin, delicate body.
The Oribe glaze is applied in two areas—both inside and outside the bowl. The exterior features two different iron-painted motifs.
You can observe wheel marks left intentionally on the clay surface, as well as carved facets (sogi-ato) in various spots.
Over time, fine crackles (kan’nyū) will develop across the surface, adding a unique, aged character with continued use.
This is a subdued and contemplative matcha bowl that evokes a sense of wabi, as if returning to the very roots of the chanoyu (way of tea).
