Kiyomizu Ware Nanban Mishima Handmade Hōhin
Introducing the Nanban Mishima Hōhin from Kiyomizu Ware.
A “hōhin” is a handleless teapot, traditionally used for serving high-quality teas such as gyokuro in the practice of sencha tea ceremony.
The reason it has no handle is that premium teas like gyokuro are not brewed with boiling water. Instead, the water is first cooled using a yuzamashi (water cooler) before being poured over the tea leaves. As a result, the teapot does not become too hot to hold, making a handle unnecessary.
Additionally, to prevent any metallic taste, the hōhin does not contain a metal strainer. Instead, it features a finely grooved spout and a small hole in the lid. The capacity is approximately 200ml.
The clay is wheel-thrown, and a technique called inka is used to decorate the surface. Each floral pattern is carefully stamped by hand, and then clay is rubbed into the indentations, creating a striking contrast where the floral motifs appear to emerge from the black background.
With its bold form, wide opening for easy addition and removal of tea leaves, and effortless cleaning, this hōhin is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
The nearly full-surface inka decoration, combined with meticulous craftsmanship and advanced techniques, results in an exceptional piece that is designed for long-term use.
