Yamanaka-nuri Wooden Wagatani Carving Square Tray, Negoro, 60 cm
Introducing a wooden square tray with Wagatani carving from Yamanaka-nuri.
Wagatani carving gets its name from Wagatani Village, located near the Yamanaka Onsen and next to the Kutani ware region.
While Yamanaka lacquerware is often made by turning wood on a lathe, Wagatani carving is a rarer technique within Yamanaka lacquerware. The process involves splitting the raw wood with a wedge and then carving it with chisels.
Originally, Wagatani Village was known for producing wooden roofing boards, and it is said that the villagers made these trays as a side business. The method of making them is quite different from traditional Yamanaka lacquerware.
Wagatani carving became extinct at the end of the Meiji period, and Wagatani Village was eventually submerged beneath a dam. However, it was revived by the Living National Treasure, Tatsuaki Kuroda, though its heritage remains at risk today.
The beautifully regular chisel marks create an expressive texture, and the chisel carving along the edges of the tray flows continuously, requiring exceptional skill.
The craftsmanship is intricate and detailed.
The lacquer is Negoro-nuri, a style originally from the Kishu Negoro-ji Temple. The process involves applying a black undercoat, followed by a red overcoat. The red lacquer is then polished down to reveal the black underneath, intentionally creating a patterned effect.
This square tray is carved from a single piece of wood, making it a rare and valuable piece.
