Hagi-yaki Hayashi Kōyō White Kairagi Cylindrical Flower Vase
Introducing a flower vase made by Hayashi Kōyō in Hagi-yaki style.
The defining feature of this vase is undoubtedly the white “kairagi.”
“Kairagi” refers to areas where the glaze has shrunk and become granular. Originally, it described the skin of the butterfly shark, which adorned the grips of swords, due to the glaze’s textured, rough surface resembling that of shark skin.
In the context of tea ceremony, “kairagi” is particularly appreciated as a beautiful element in the overall aesthetic.
The vase is crafted from reddish-brown clay, thrown on a wheel, and covered with white glaze. There are several areas where the glaze has cracked and peeled back to reveal the underlying clay, creating a bold and powerful impression.
The surface of the white glaze is adorned with countless fine cracks, giving it a glossy texture.
The upper part showcases drips of glaze, while the lower half reveals the rugged texture of the base clay, allowing for an enjoyable contrast.
With a slight indentation on the front, the cylindrical shape tapers at the opening, making it easy to arrange flowers.
Just a few blooms evoke the world of wabi-sabi, offering a sense of the changing seasons.
This space-saving design creates a unique atmosphere with minimal floral arrangements.
Dimensions: Diameter 8 cm, Height 14 cm.
