Hagi Ware: Shirahagi Kairagi Kumidashi (Tea Cup) – One-of-a-Kind Piece
We would like to introduce a kairagi kumidashi (tea cup) from Hagi ware.
“Kairagi” refers to the part of the glaze that has shrunk and become grainy. Originally, “kairagi” referred to the skin of a shark used to adorn sword handles, as the rough, textured surface resembling shark skin led to this term being used.
In particular, “kairagi” is appreciated in tea ceremonies for its scenic quality.
This piece is wheel-thrown from clay, covered with a white glaze that has cracked in several places, revealing the underlying body. The bold, strong appearance of the cracks leaves a powerful impression.
The surface of the white glaze is glossy and thick, extending all the way to the underside of the piece. The wide rim, which flares outward, offers a pleasant mouthfeel and makes it easy to drink from.
The foot is a triangular cut foot, presenting a rare shape that is one of its highlights. This piece is characterized by its substantial feel and rugged texture.
Countless cracks are visible on the surface, allowing for a deepening appreciation of the “Seven Transformations of Hagi” as it is used over time.
