Asahi-yaki: Lid Holder by Asahi Hosai – “Yagaku”
Introducing a lid holder made by Asahi Hosai from Asahi-yaki.
A lid holder is a tool used in tea ceremonies to place the lid of a kettle. It is also used when drawing water with a ladle, and its shape, material, and design are matched according to the theme or season of the tea gathering.
Though it is a small item, it is highly visible when displayed on a shelf, making it an indispensable tool.
This particular lid holder is called “Yagaku,” and it is repurposed from a stand used in ancient China to hold an oil lamp for reading at night.
It has a shape resembling an urn, with several openwork designs similar to those found in a firelight window.
Entirely handmade, it features these openwork designs, reflecting the high level of ceramic craftsmanship.
Shaped from white clay and coated with a white glaze, it displays crackle patterns on its surface. Simple yet embodying the timeless quality typical of Asahi-yaki, it has a durable and classic appeal.
It is a lid holder perfectly suited for the long autumn nights and the season of reading.
