Suihatsu (117 cm) – Burnt Cedar
The Suihatsu is a versatile tool used in the tea ceremony and other traditional Japanese arts. It can hold hanging flower vases, strips of paper, decorative fans, and more. Its name comes from its similarity to the Suihatsu used in biwa (Japanese lute) making, and it is typically crafted from materials like cedar or bamboo.
This particular Suihatsu has been treated by lightly burning the surface of the cedar to minimize visible dirt and give it a distinctive color. A long, narrow groove is carved into the center, allowing the hanging hooks to move up and down and adjust their position freely. By attaching another metal fitting to the top of this groove, you can display strips of paper or decorative fans.
It proves especially useful when there is no space to display flowers or calligraphy. For example, during outdoor tea ceremonies (nodate) where walls or columns are not available, it can be attached to a nodate umbrella.
In ordinary households, if there is a small space like an entrance or a column, you can use it to display seasonal flowers and calligraphy strips or decorative fans, allowing you to enjoy the seasonal atmosphere.
This tool is a unique Japanese creation that embodies the appreciation of the changing seasons, even in small spaces, and is a reflection of Japan’s seasonal sensitivity.
