Hagi Ware, Kohyo Hayashi – Nezumi Glaze Ido Matcha Bowl
Introducing the Ido matcha bowl by Kohyo Hayashi, a piece of Hagi ware.
The Ido matcha bowl is originally a type of Korean tea bowl, believed to have been made relatively early during the Joseon Dynasty. Among the Korean tea bowls that arrived in Japan after the Muromachi period, it is considered one of the highest-ranking types and is regarded as the king of Tang-style tea bowls.
One characteristic of the Ido matcha bowl is that it is made from a coarse, iron-rich clay that has a reddish-brown color. Due to the use of a fast potter’s wheel, the surface often exhibits prominent ribbed marks from the wheel. The foot, known as the bamboo joint foot, is designed for convenience when applying the glaze, making it easier to handle the bowl. This foot is carved out, with a scraper entering diagonally, causing the center of the foot to rise in a spiral pattern.
The glazing extends all the way up to the inside of the foot, so there is almost no visible unglazed clay on the foot, which is one of the defining features of the Ido matcha bowl.
The bowl features a slightly thin, understated body with a white glaze tinged with a bit of gray. Variations in the glaze’s drips and flows are points of interest. The glaze on the surface is applied thickly, giving it a glossy finish.
The bowl displays fine crackles and pinholes, highlighting the typical characteristics of Hagi ware. It has a solid and substantial feel with an air of luxury. Slightly smaller than a large Ido matcha bowl, it is also suitable for use as a thin tea bowl. The predominance of white glaze gives it a bright appearance.
It is a piece that can be enjoyed over time, experiencing the “seven transformations of Hagi” as it ages.

萩烧 红阳作 老鼠釉 井戸 抹茶碗
介绍一款来自萩烧的林红阳制作的井戸茶碗。
井戸茶碗原本是一种朝鲜茶碗,据信是在李朝比较早期制作的。在室町时代以后传入的朝鲜茶碗中,井戸茶碗被认为是第一等的,并被誉为唐物茶碗的王者。
井戸茶碗的特点是土质粗糙且富含铁分,呈赤褐色。由于这种粗糙的土壤是用快速旋转的轮子制成的,因此表面上经常可以看到明显的轮痕。
高台被称为竹节高台,这种设计是为了在施釉时便于拿取茶碗的便利性。削出来的高台内,由于斜角的刮刀会进入高台内,因此中央部分会形成类似漩涡的凸起。
施釉时,通常会将釉料涂抹至高台内侧,这样高台的土质部分几乎不可见。这也是井戸茶碗的一项特点。
整体上,井戸茶碗具有清淡的薄胎,施有稍带鼠灰色的白釉,釉药的流淌和变化是其观赏点之一。表面的釉药较厚且有光泽。
全碗上可见细小的裂纹和气孔,这些都很好地展示了萩烧的特点。整体质感沉稳且富有高级感。
由于尺寸略小于大井戸茶碗,因此也适合用作薄茶。白色釉药的比例较多,使其看起来明亮。长期使用可以体验到“萩的七变”,是一件值得珍藏的好品。
