Kiyomizu Ware Nanban Mishima Style Kumidashi (Tea Cups) Set of 5
This set features five kumidashi (tea cups) in the Nanban Mishima style from Kiyomizu ware.
“Nanban” refers to unglazed, fired pottery made in countries of Southeast Asia and other southern regions. It has a rough texture and an earthy appearance, often in dark brown tones. Even if these pieces are made in Japan, if they exhibit this particular style, they are still referred to as “Nanban.”
The term Mishima describes the technique of hand-pressing floral-shaped stamps onto the surface of the tea cups, known as “inban.” White clay is then rubbed into the indented areas created by these stamps, allowing white flowers to emerge against the dark background.
The exterior of the cups is almost entirely covered with these stamps, showcasing a high level of skill and considerable labor. The body is thrown on a potter’s wheel, resulting in a very lightweight and delicate feel.
The rim of the cup curves outward, providing a pleasant drinking experience and making it easy to use. Additionally, the cups stack well, allowing for efficient storage without taking up much space.
These cups can be considered a masterpiece, encapsulating the craftsmanship of skilled artisans.
Dimensions: Diameter 9 cm, Height 5 cm.
