Mino Ware Kiyohide Black Oribe Matcha Bowl
We are pleased to introduce a black Oribe matcha bowl from Mino Ware.
Black Oribe is a type of Oribe ware that originated in the Keicho era, created at the Yahichida kiln in the Mino Motoyashiki area, according to the preferences of the tea master Furuta Oribe.
“Hikidashi-kuro” refers to black pottery that emerged during the late period of tenmoku glaze in the Seto and Mino regions, encompassing varieties like Seto Kuro, Oribe Kuro, and Black Oribe. The name comes from the process of pulling the pottery from the kiln using iron tongs.
In most cases, you can see marks from the iron tongs on the vessel.
Black Oribe bowls are primarily of the “kutsugata” (boot shape), featuring black glaze with some areas opened to reveal rustic patterns painted in iron glaze, or incised designs added with a spatula.
The kutsugata shape has a rim that is round and slightly irregularly oval, tapering at the bottom, and is used for bowls and tea bowls.
This black Oribe matcha bowl has also been shaped into an oval form after being thrown on a potter’s wheel, resulting in a uniquely textured bowl.
The bottom is flat, the sides are straight, and the outside retains the marks from the potter’s wheel.
The rim is thick and wide, providing a robust texture.
The front features a dimple-like indentation with an iron design painted within it.
