Echizen Lacquerware – Suhama-shaped Kogo (Incense Container) with Morning Glory Maki-e Design
Introducing a kogo (incense container) from Echizen lacquerware, featuring a Morning Glory maki-e design.
A kogo is a lidded container used to hold incense, and it is often used in the tea ceremony. It can be placed in a charcoal container (sumitori) or set on a fukusa (silk cloth) or kamikamashiki (paper mat) for display in the tokonoma (alcove).
During the season of using a furo (portable brazier), lacquerware is typically used to hold incense, while during ro (sunken hearth) ceremonies, ceramic containers are used for pressed incense.
Kogo are often admired as ornamental objects, and there are many different styles.
This particular kogo is in the suhama (sandbar) shape. Suhama refers to a water’s edge with a sandbar or islet, and the shape of the kogo reflects the undulating outline of the sandbar when viewed from above.
The kogo is made from white wood, and the Morning Glory flowers are beautifully and vibrantly depicted in rich colors, creating a fresh and cool atmosphere. The design includes vivid reds, greens, and golds, with the raden technique (the use of inlaid shell) partially applied to enhance the visual effect.
Though it is a small item, this kogo is a true work of art, showcasing the application of many advanced techniques.
