Kiyomizu Ware – Lid Rest (Futaoki) by Nakamura Sūran – Crab Kōchi-yaki
Introducing a lid rest (futaoki) by Nakamura Sūran, made from Kiyomizu ware, featuring a Crab design in kōchi-yaki style.
A futaoki is a utensil used in the tea ceremony to place the lid of the kettle (kama) during the preparation of tea. It is also used to support the hishaku (ladle) when drawing water. The shape, material, and design of the futaoki are chosen according to the theme of the tea gathering or the season.
Because it is often displayed on the tea shelf (tana), it is a highly visible and important item, though small in size. Despite its size, it plays an indispensable role in the tea ceremony.
Kōchi refers to a type of colorful soft clay pottery that originated in the late Ming Dynasty in the Kōchi region of southern China. It is characterized by the use of vibrant and rich glazes.
This futaoki is finished in a lustrous reddish-brown hue, which is a deeper tone that is rare for works by Sūran. It belongs to a group of seven different futaoki styles, and while it can be used for various occasions, its color and theme suggest that it is most suitable for the summer months, particularly around June, July, and August, or for gatherings with a theme related to the sea or rivers.
This futaoki is a finely crafted piece, handmade with great attention to detail.
