Kyoto Kiyomizu Ware Seishou-made Sencha Teapot with Bamboo Crab Design
We are pleased to introduce a sencha teapot from Kiyomizu Ware, designed specifically for high-quality teas such as Gyokuro.
The teapot is crafted from white porcelain, and features a depiction of a bamboo crab along with a poetic inscription.
This design is based on a famous illustration by the artist Ike Taiga, and the poem is a transcription of part of a verse written by the tea master Ōchō, who was 82 years old in the 6th year of the Hōreki era (1756).
Ōchō, also known as Baishao, was a monk of the Ōbaku school during the Edo period and is considered one of the key figures in the revival of the sencha tea tradition.
The poem reads:
“Shōshō taru kahan no take,
Hōkai hitori eda ni noboru.”
(Translation: “A lone crab climbs the bamboo branch by the quiet riverside.”)
The latter part of the poem reflects the difficulty of navigating life in this world, symbolized by the crab’s solitary climb.
The teapot has a gently rounded shape, is compact, lightweight, and delicately made, showcasing the high level of pottery craftsmanship involved.
The lid knob is designed in the shape of a flower, making it both easy to handle and adding an elegant touch to the overall design, making it a truly high-end piece.
