Kiyomizu Ware Seizan-Style Firebox (Oranda)
We are pleased to introduce the Seizan-style firebox (Oranda) from Kiyomizu ware.
A firebox is a vessel used to hold ash and small charcoal pieces, originally designed to hold tobacco embers.
The surface of the ash is decorated with fine lines to refine its appearance for use.
In the tea ceremony, the firebox is placed on the tobacco tray (takobon) and positioned near the main guest. While it is a supporting item, it is often in plain sight and serves as an object of appreciation, making it an important tool in the tea ceremony.
The size of the firebox depends on the size and height of the tobacco tray, requiring careful balance when pairing the two.
“Oranda” refers to ceramics brought to Japan by Dutch ships during the Edo period. The tobacco leaves are painted between arabesque patterns on a white porcelain body, decorated in blue, yellow, green, and orange. The brushwork is vivid and lively.
The thick material helps prevent heat from transferring outward, providing stability.
The wide opening allows for easy insertion of ash or charcoal, and it is easy to shape the ash inside.
This piece exudes a European, Western-style atmosphere, and its refreshing and lively design immediately evokes the essence of the Netherlands.
