Banko Ware Celadon Water Jar
Introducing a celadon water jar from Banko Ware.
A water jar (mizu-sashi) is used during the tea ceremony to hold water for replenishing the kettle and for rinsing tea bowls and tea whisks.
Celadon is a type of porcelain that is coated with a glaze that has a bluish hue, fired at a high temperature.
The glaze’s blue color is created when iron oxide, contained in the ashes of deciduous trees, is reduced in the kiln during the firing process.
Celadon was perfected during the Tang and Five Dynasties periods in China, reaching its peak during the Song Dynasty. It was treated as official ware and exported as a trade item.
In Japan, celadon was not produced domestically until the Edo period, making it a rare and highly valued material, regarded with great respect.
This water jar has a very beautiful blue-green color, showcasing the true beauty of celadon.
The jar is entirely unadorned, with a simple cylindrical shape, yet it is lightweight and easy to handle.
